#15: Blankets by Craig Thompson
Pardon my lack of meaningful words for a first sentence, but I’m not really sure where to start with Blankets. It just felt exactly like the title. It wrapped me up, took me in, and kept me warm. I don’t have a lot of experience with graphic novels, only reading Persepolis last year, but I keeping thinking that if there are more out there like this, I’m positive these stories could become a habit. The daily comics were part of my morning routine before school growing up, so maybe this is just a natural progression. Either way, I loved Blankets because it made me remember what honest art looks like. Words can describe feelings all day long, but sometimes a hand drawn pictures of two kids in the snow is equally moving. This story is part teen angst, part young love, and part family challenge. And if you can’t identify with any of that, then go outside or something.
I think that’s all I have to say. So instead of showing you the cover, even though it’s great, the picture above will give some perspective of what it’s like to read Blankets along with a blanket of your own.
